Increase outdoor activities – but avoid staying outdoors from 11 am to 4 pm as the UV level is high. Protect from direct UV light by having a hat or a pair of sunglasses.
Never use electronic gadgets lying down or in the dark – this will increase eye strain and thus result in increase of myopia (short-sightedness).
Always maintain a good 30 cm distance (approximately an arm’s length) when doing any near work such as reading a book or using any electronic device.
After every 20 to 30 mins of near work it is recommended to take a break of 1 to 2 minutes. During this break time we must not use any other electronic gadgets; instead, rest our eyes by looking at something far away from the window such as trees or greeneries.
If you are wearing spectacles for myopia it is essential that you wear them all the time as directed by your eye care practitioner.
Increase dietary intake of green leafy vegetables to reduce the progression of age-related eye disease such as age–related macular degeneration (ARMD).
Never watch television in the dark – always ensure that there is ample lighting when watching the television to reduce the strain in the eyes.
Keep it a good habit to visit an eye care practitioner yearly to monitor your current prescription even when there are no signs of changes. This will ensure that your prescription is up to date and prevent further regression.
*Eye care practitioner mentioned above refers to optometrist.
